The Bay
De Noc Kennel Club is involved in several community service programs, including
two activities involving children. The first is a program on Dog Safety
and Responsible Dog Ownership which is presented to elementary school children
every spring. Children are given information on how to properly care for
dogs, and, in a hands-on demonstration, how to safely interact with dogs.
They also learn about training dogs and the many ways dogs are used in society.
The most recent addition to our community
services program is the "Books with Bowser" reading program. In this
program, volunteers and their dogs are paired with second and third grade
students who need help with their reading skills. research shows that
these students are often more willing to interact with therapy dogs than with
people because it gives them a non-judgmental environment in which to read.
Most participants will show a marked increase in reading skills, some by as much
as two grade levels, over the course of the school year.

The Kennel Club in conjunction with the Delta
Area Animal Society provided dispensers and mutt mitts for doggy-do clean up at
Ludington Park. A volunteer from the Kennel club checks the dispensers
regularly and refills them as necessary.

For the past year, the Bay De Noc Kennel Club
has been working in conjunction with the Delta Area Animal Society, Delta County
Officials and other concerned animal enthusiasts to turn the Delta County Animal
Shelter into the Delta County Animal Complex, Adoption and Training Center.
We have totally renovated the current Animal
Shelter Building and are in the process of completing a 33'X27' addition to the
building, which will house a new lobby and office area, providing space for a
new cat quarantine room in the existing building.
In April 2005, we will be breaking ground on a
60' X 80' training building, which will allow the Bay De Noc Kennel Club to
offer continuing obedience classes, puppy classes, and other dog related
activities. In addition, the location of the training building will allow
qualified dog trainers to assess and do basic training with shelter dogs, making
them more desirable adoption prospects. It will also allow a quiet and
neutral place for persons looking to adopt an animal from the shelter to see
what the animal is like away from the shelter environment.
HOME OF THE BAY DE NOC
KENNEL CLUB which was
done in 3 phases =. Phase I was painting the interior and exterior of the
existing building. Phase II was adding a new office and lobby to the existing
building and Phase III was the erection of a 60' by 80' training building.
