COMING WHEN CALLED Coming when called is the most important thing your dog will ever learn and a dog that always comes when called is a joy to have.Never, under any circumstances, punish your dog after he comes to you. Your dog will associate the punishment with coming. (Would you go to someone who hit you after calling you?) Don’t call your dog and then immediately do something he does not like (a bath, going into his pen, getting tied up, being put in the house etc.) When he comes praise him and give him a reward: play with him for 30 seconds and then you can lead him off to that thing he does not like and he will not associate it with coming to you. If your dog gets loose never chase him, it only teaches him that he’s faster than you. Turn and run away from him, clapping your hands, laughing, having fun; chances are he will turn and chase you. Then you can turn, squat down and open your arms to give him a big hug (after all he came and that is the important thing.) Play the come game; stash treats around the house (on the TV, on the dresser, on the kitchen counter) and then go stand by the TV and call your dog in a very excited tone. When he comes praise him and give him a treat. Go in the kitchen and call him. Do this all over the house. Use the come command in the house whenever you are going to offer him something good (a treat, his dish, a toy.) Use a long line on him in the yard, let him wander around and when he is distracted call him and if necessary pull him to you, praising all the way. Do this a couple of times a day for a few days then switch to a lighter line. If your complaint is that your dog does not stay at home and won’t stay on his own property, SHAME ON YOU, a dog should never be allowed to run free.
