The
Bay De Noc Kennel Club sponsors its own Therapy Dog Program for members
interested in volunteering with their dogs. Before being allowed to participate,
dogs and handlers are evaluated to determine their suitability for the program.
Dogs must be friendly with both other people and other dogs, without being to
excitable. Handlers must demonstrate the ability to control their dogs through
basic obedience. Once approved for the program, volunteers are welcome to
participate in any of the Therapy Dog activities.
The primary activity for the Therapy
Dog Program has been weekly visits to area long-term care facilities. Research
has shown that the simple act of petting a dog is beneficial, both mentally and
physically, for the residents. For many residents, a visit from the dogs is the
high point of their week.
